WWI private purchase silver identity tag
Engraved: C.V. CUTTELL 6962 C. of E. LONDON SCOTTISH
A preliminary search identifies: Cuttell, Charles V., Private, Service No. 6962 14th London Regiment.
The 14th County of London Regiment (the London Scottish) was the first Territorial infantry battalion to join the BEF in September 1914, where it was attached to GHQ. Just over a month later, on the night of 31st October, it fought its first battle at Messines, commemorated today by the memorial that stands beside the Messines-Ypres road. Among those who took part was the actor Ronald Colman who was wounded by a shell burst which left him with a permanent limp. The battalion remained on the Western Front for the rest of the war, fighting at Ypres, on the Somme, at Arras and Cambrai.
This private purchase silver identity tag is missing its wrist chain and has a number of surface scratches and is slightly toned. One of the chain loops has separated slightly leaving a small gap. The reverse appears to have a silver quality stamp but the numbers are virtually illegible. Nevertheless a very interesting personal item.

Royal Artillery sweetheart brooch in presentation box
Gilded and enamelled brooch with Deco style three step suspension bar in a leatherette covered box with green velvet covered pad and silk lining to lid. Gold foil lettering inside lid has almost completely worn away. It reads CO-OPERATIVE WHOLESALE SOCIETY LD. MANCHESTER. Especially during WWI, wives, sisters and girlfriends often wore brooches in the form of a miniature badge representing a regiment or branch of the armed forces in which male loved ones were serving. Worn publicly with patriotic pride as a token of support, they also demonstrated that their loved one was ‘doing his bit’.
The box has wear to all surfaces, underside especially, and all corners and edges. The hinge is firmly attached and works perfectly as does the locking catch. The brooch has wear to gilding on high points and red enamel is absent from crown. No maker's mark. The items are together as found, although they may not have originally been associated. Nevertheless totally charming and a touching reminder of the heartache and sorrow so many endured.

Framed WWI Croix du Combattant medal and diploma
Croix du Combattant decoration awarded to those who fought for France. After WWI, the veterans campaigned for a medal to be issued by the government in recognition of the special status of those who had taken part in the bitter fighting, as opposed to those who had served behind the lines. In June 1930, a fitting decoration was created and awarded to all who had served with a front-line unit for 90 days, or had been wounded, or taken prisoner.
Awarded to Jules Dubois, this medal was purchased from the family by an associate whilst on a visit to France.
It has been mounted with its certificate and embellished with reflective tricolour ribbon within an ebonised wood frame. The reverse has been sealed with a copy of La Voix du Nord (The Voice of the North) dated Tuesday 12th July 1949, in itself an interesting element.
The medal is toned but the ribbon colours remain bright. There is some creasing to the certificate and some minor loss of finish under the bottom of the frame, mainly from having been displayed on a stand. The newspaper has yellowed and stained but remains bright.

British European Airways (BEA) pilots wing badge
Worn on the uniform, this is a good original example. Gold bullion wire embroidery padded wings, the BEA initials within a laurel wreath surmounted by a 'Astral Crown' and with felt cloth backing. Black hessian lining on reverse. Very good used condition.
BEA and BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) merged in 1974 to become British Airways.

Replica of the Seal of Charles University, Prague
Presented to Vivian Slight in recognition of a thesis on the legal aspects of flight crew fatigue
Prepared for McGill University's Institute of Air and Space Law, Montreal in 1966. The seal is accompanied by a typewritten note signed by Vivien Slight explaining the significance of the award. Flight International 5th May 1966 carries a short feature entitled Canadian Pilot Fatigue Study which refers to Mr Vivian Slight who was the Head of the Transport Division of the Scottish Council returning to Montreal to lead a four-man man research team into the subject of flight-crew fatigue. The study was sponsored by Professor Dr. Michael Milde, an associate director of Charles University, Prague who at that time was living in Montreal and served from 1966 - 1991 in senior legal positions in the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) including Director of the ICAO legal bureau. He later became Director of McGill's University's Institute of Air and Space Law. The seal comes in a faux chagreen velvet lined presentation box with Art Nouveau style clasp in overall very good condition - very slight wear to base. Seal: Toned, E.F.

Sachsenhausen survivor's pin badge commemorating a meeting in 1961
Nazi concentration camps operated a classification system to differentiate between different types of prisoners. Eg. Criminals were identified with green inverted triangles - political prisoners with red.
Sachsenhausen concentration camp, located near the town of Oranienburg in Brandenburg, Germany, was used primarily for political prisoners from 1936 until May 1945. After the end of the war, Oranienburg was in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the camp was utilised as an NKVD special camp until 1950.
Overall good condition.

Buchenwald survivor's pin badge commemorating International Liberation Day - 11th April 1954
The hand representing the sworn oath "Never again an SS Europe". This was linked to a campaign against the war treaties of Bonn and Paris favouring a revival of West German military power adding weight to Europe's defences during the Cold War.
Buchenwald concentration camp, located near the City of Weimar, Germany, was liberated on 11th April 1945 by four US soldiers in the 6th Armoured Division commanded by General Patton. Bournemouth War Hospital Woodwork Depot was started in October 1915 utilising skilled volunteers to make useful items for hospitals in their spare time. Donated wooden boxes and tea chests were taken to pieces and reworked into bed rests, tables, trays, knife boxes, writing desks, ward cupboards and even crutches. The Depot closed in March 1919.
